(Hailey, ID) – It was an unusual sight at a ski slope -- a shark, race car, sphinx, grandma’s slipper and a batmobile sliding, and sometimes tumbling, down a snowy hillside. This was the scene at Rotarun Ski Area in Hailey on Saturday.
The Snow Box Derby, sponsored by the Hailey Kiwanis Club, was a delight for participants and viewers as cardboard concoctions competed for fastest, most creative, and most inspiring creation or run.
And the Winners Are:
- Kids Fastest – Kai Younger (11 years old) in the “Sphinx 3000,” a golden, claw-footed Egyptian figure that crossed the finish in 12.24 seconds.
- Kids Second Fastest – Thea Kraft (7 years old) in “Engine #1” steaming in at 13.18 seconds.
- Kids Third Fastest – Ella Guy (9 years old) in “The Roxi Taxi” steered to the finish in 15.64 seconds.
- Most Creative – “The Roxy Taxi” by Ella Guy (and her talented snow box designer, Amanda De la Rosa).
- Most Inspirational Run – Oliver Gui (12) in the “D.S. Oliver”
- Fastest Adults Snow Box – Rosco de Lora in “Grandma’s Slipper”
All remaining participants received ribbons for their efforts:

(Hailey, ID) – Cardboard takes to the slopes this Saturday for the Snow Box Derby at Rotarun Ski Area.
Come to watch or to race! The Snow Box Derby, Saturday, March 3, is sponsored by the Hailey Kiwanis Club. Cardboard concoction sledding or being pushed down the Rotarun hill will be in competition for medals awarded for fastest, most creative, and most inspiring creations. Cameras, dinosaurs, race cars, corn dogs and tanks have slid (or been pushed) down the slope of Rotarun Ski Area in previous years.
Construction requirements limit materials to only: cardboard, paint, tape and glue. All snow boxes will be inspected prior to the event. Participants must also demonstrate that they can stop their snow box if needed. The Soap Box Derby is open to anyone 5 years and older. In the name of safety, sledders must go feet first and wear helmets.
The entry fee is $10 per individual, or $25 per business. Registration will be on at Rotarun Ski Area 9:30-10:15 a.m. the day of the race. Racing will begin at 10:30 a.m.

(Hailey, ID) – Racers, parents, grandparents, and friends were on the fast snow at Rotarun, Friday night. The Telepocalypse series joined with the Friday Night Race Series under a sliver moon and two bright evening stars. The mountain was packed and the exuberant crowd enjoyed great times under the lights of Rotarun.
This Friday Night series was fun and flexible with dual racing trials. It was open to all ages and any equipment: alpine, telemark or snowboard were welcomed. It will be a definite repeat for our next season. The “dual” format lets two racers compete head-to-head. At the Feb. 24 finals, in addition to the two-run duals the series points were tabulated and a “ski off” between the top men confirmed the King of the Hill, with the most winning points, Jimmy Grossman was crowed King of the Hill. There was a Trophy for the Queen of the Hill, but it will be held till next year since there was no consistent female racer to be crowed.

The SVO Pet of the Week is Liza
The SVO pet of the week is Liza. Liza was adopted from the Shelter three years ago and has found herself back and once again looking for a forever home. If given the chance, Liza will tell you all about it. She loves to talk, and she loves getting attention. She is most talkative when she is hungry, which is about 20 hours of the day. It seems that in the past, Liza was allowed to eat as much as she wanted and this resulted in her becoming quite large. Here at the Shelter, she is back on a diet and we're working on getting her to be the svelte beauty her lovely markings should grace. While Liza isn't crazy about the idea, she is being a good sport! Liza is good with other cats and not too fazed by dogs. She is a wonderful cat with loads of personality. This girl deserves nothing but a fabulous forever home. Liza is a spayed female Domestic Shorthair born around August 2005. For more information on Liza or any of the other wonderful dogs or cats awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.com or phone us at 788-4351.
The SVO Pet of the Week is Rolo. Rolo and her sister Tootsie were left at the shelter at night, presumably abandoned. Although they had each other, it was still a very scary event. Rolo is sweet and sensitive and can be a bit nervous in new situations. Since arriving at the shelter, Miss Rolo is experiencing lots of new things and is already building up her confidence. Rolo loves other dogs and would benefit by sharing her new home with another more confident canine. Due to her shy nature, we are recommending a home without children under the age of twelve years old. Rolo is ready to be someone’s special little girl and become the most loving and loyal puppy she can be. Rolo is a medium size, spayed female Australian Shepherd/Chow Chow mix born around August 2010. For more information about Rolo or any of the other wonderful dogs and cats available for adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or phone 788-4351.
The SVO Pet of the Week is Eleanor. Eleanor came to the shelter when her family lost their home. Despite these hard times, she is a super sweet, happy and outgoing girl. Eleanor is always ready for any adventure; she is a wonderful hiking companion and loves everyone she meets human and canine! Eleanor has not had much formal training, but she is extremely bright and eager to learn new things. This agile and spirited girl would do best in a home where regular exercise is part of the routine. She has lived with children before, but, due to her energy level, we feel kids over 6 years old would be best. Eleanor is ready to resume living the good life and not miss out on enjoying one day of summer!Eleanor is a medium size spayed female Labrador Retriever / German Shorthaired Pointer mix born around June 2010. For more information on Eleanor or any of the other wonderful dogs and cats awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-4351.
The SVO Pet of the Week is Wishbone. Wishbone was given up due to family complications. He is 10 years old. He is taking the change in stride, but his unhappiness is quite apparent. It is tough for senior dogs to be homeless, so we are hoping he’ll find his “forever home” soon. Wishbone is a great little dog. He is friendly with most dogs and has lived with cats before. He loves going for hikes and loves to be with people. If you’ve thought about having a Jack Russell, but weren’t sure you could handle a young one, Wishbone would be the perfect introduction to the breed. He is still quite a character and definitely an active dog. Wishbone would do best in a home without very young children and with owners able to give him moderate amounts of exercise. This handsome gentleman is eager to be back in a home, this time forever.Wishbone is a neutered male Jack Russell Terrier (purebred) born around June 2001. For more information about Wishbone and all of the other wonderful dogs and cats awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter, visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or phone 788-4351.
Work with a dog to promote pet adoption this Friday, June 24! Take Your Dog to Work Day is a national event first celebrated in 1999. According to the official website, "This annual event encourages employers to experience the value of pets in their workplace for this one special Friday to celebrate and support the pet community" and to encourage people to adopt homeless animals from humane societies, animal shelters and rescues. While the dog-loving nature of this community means many of us are already allowed to bring our pooches to the office, this celebration is a great chance for those who don't regularly bring their dogs to work to do so as well.
Visit www.takeyourdog.com for more information on the day and to download a participation packet which includes sample policies on pets in the workplace, particularly if you or your employer needs some reassurance about safety and productivity. In fact, according to the website, studies have shown that having dogs in the workplace actually "increases productivity and creativity, decreases absenteeism and improves co-worker relationships." And for those of you who can never resist photo ops of your beloved pets, you're invited to submit your workin' like a dog photos to their annual photo contest and have a chance to win prizes.
If you don't have a dog but might be ready for one, please visit the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley to see the many adorable adoptable dogs ready for their loving forever homes. You can get a preview of some of the available animals at http://animalshelterwrv.org/dog_gallery.php. If you're unsure of how to choose the right animal for your life, the shelter's adoption counselors are trained to help you make a great choice. About Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley
The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, the first “no kill” shelter in Idaho, promotes companion animal welfare by providing temporary shelter for homeless animals, adopting them to qualified homes and reducing animal abuse, neglect and overpopulation through community education and spay/neuter services. More than 90 percent of its funding comes from private donations.
In 2010 more than 1500 animals received services from the shelter. This includes 388 animals that were adopted, 257 lost animals that were reunited with their owners, 247 shelter animals that were spayed/neutered, and 363 privately owned animals that were spayed or neutered at no cost to their owners, and over 6000 pounds of food distributed through our Paws for Hunger partnership with The Hunger Coalition. On an average day, the shelter cares for 35 dogs and 31 cats.
Additional information is available by calling 208-788-4351, or on the Internet at www.animalshelterwrv.org.
