(Hailey, ID) –  It was an unusual sight at a ski slope --  a shark, race car, sphinx, grandma’s slipper and a batmobile sliding, and sometimes tumbling, down a snowy hillside.  This was the scene at Rotarun Ski Area in Hailey on Saturday.

The Snow Box Derby, sponsored by the Hailey Kiwanis Club, was a delight for participants and viewers as cardboard concoctions competed for fastest, most creative, and most inspiring creation or run.

And the Winners Are:

-          Kids Fastest – Kai Younger (11 years old) in the “Sphinx 3000,”  a golden, claw-footed Egyptian figure that crossed the finish in 12.24 seconds.

-          Kids Second Fastest – Thea Kraft (7 years old) in “Engine #1” steaming in at 13.18 seconds.

-          Kids Third Fastest – Ella Guy (9 years old) in “The Roxi Taxi” steered to the finish in 15.64 seconds.

-          Most Creative – “The Roxy Taxi” by Ella Guy (and her talented snow box designer, Amanda De la Rosa).

-          Most Inspirational Run – Oliver Gui (12) in the “D.S. Oliver”

-          Fastest Adults Snow Box – Rosco de Lora in “Grandma’s Slipper”

All remaining participants received ribbons for their efforts:

(Hailey, ID) –  Cardboard takes to the slopes this Saturday for the Snow Box Derby at Rotarun Ski Area.

Come to watch or to race!   The Snow Box Derby, Saturday, March 3,  is sponsored by the Hailey Kiwanis Club.  Cardboard concoction sledding or being pushed down the Rotarun hill will be in competition for medals awarded for fastest, most creative, and most inspiring creations.  Cameras, dinosaurs, race cars, corn dogs and tanks have slid (or been pushed) down the slope of Rotarun Ski Area in previous years.

Construction requirements limit materials to only: cardboard, paint, tape and glue.  All snow boxes will be inspected prior to the event.  Participants must also demonstrate that they can stop their snow box if needed.  The Soap Box Derby is open to anyone 5 years and older.  In the name of safety, sledders must go feet first and wear helmets.

The entry fee is $10 per individual, or $25 per business.  Registration will be on at Rotarun Ski Area 9:30-10:15 a.m. the day of the race.  Racing will begin at 10:30 a.m.

(Hailey, ID) – Racers, parents, grandparents, and friends were on the fast snow at Rotarun, Friday night. The Telepocalypse series joined with the Friday Night Race Series under a sliver moon and two bright evening stars.  The mountain was packed and the exuberant crowd enjoyed great times under the lights of Rotarun.

This Friday Night series was fun and flexible with dual racing trials.  It was open to all ages and any equipment: alpine, telemark or snowboard were welcomed.  It will be a definite repeat for our next season.  The “dual” format lets two racers compete head-to-head.  At the Feb. 24 finals, in addition to the two-run duals the series points were tabulated and a “ski off” between the top men confirmed the King of the Hill, with the most winning points, Jimmy Grossman  was crowed King of the Hill. There was a Trophy for the Queen of the Hill, but it will be held till next year since there was no consistent female racer to be crowed.

The SVO Pet of the Week is Wendall. Wendall arrived at the Shelter as a stray cat, apparently abandoned. It didn't take long for us to realize he had been a pet at some time. He enjoys attention and has a great purr. He is easygoing and seems fine with other cats. Wendall likes to explore and is still quite curious. We think he would make a great family pet, as well as an only pet, as he seems to like getting all the attention. With his bob tail and handsome face, he's sure to win you over! Wendall is a neutered male Domestic Medium Hair born around February 2010. For more information about Wendall or any of the other wonderful pets awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, please visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-4351.

The SVO Pet of the Week is Belle. Belle is one of the sweetest dogs to pass through our doors. Poor Belle was returned to the Shelter because her adopter became seriously ill and no longer able to take care of her. Everyone here hopes that this special dog can find a loving home in which to to spend her golden years. Only great things can be said about this girl. She is good with people and loves to visit the local nursing home and bring cheer to the residents. Belle is wonderful with dogs and cats, and she loves to snuggle up and nap as well as take walks. If ever you have considered opening your home to a senior pet, you will not be able to find one nicer than Belle. Belle is a medium size spayed female Border Collie mix born around January 2001. For more information about Belle or any of the other wonderful dogs or cats awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, please visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-6444.

The SVO Pet of the Week is Dora. Dora is as sweet and cute as they come. However, she is very true to her breed and proved to be a bit too much for her first owner. Australian Cattle Dogs are driven, smart and athletic. They need a benevolent leader to show them the ropes as well as someone who will respect their herding instincts and keep them mentally occupied. Dora has already shown that she likes to herd, so we are recommending a home that has had herding dog experience as well as a home without small children. She is incredibly smart, sweet, and eager to learn. We believe she could become an exceptional family member. Dora is a spayed female medium size Australian Cattle Dog born around May 2011. For More information about Dora or any of the other wonderful dogs or cats awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, please visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-4351.

The SVO Pet of the Week is Harrison. Some cats are blessed with beauty and personality. Harrison is certainly one of those cats! He is as friendly as he is handsome, but there is no ego to go along with it, making him a truly wonderful kitty! Harrison is friendly with other cats and does not seem put out by dogs. We think he would make a great family pet and we're sure he would enjoy lots of attention. Because of his long coat, Harrison will require some grooming, but he doesn't seem to mind this activity one bit. If you are looking for an all around wonderful kitty, stop by and meet Harrison! The SVO Pet of the Week is Roxy. Roxy is an exuberant, social, and fun dog. She hasn't had much in the way of training, but she is a quick learner. Her first home didn't know exactly what they were getting into when they adopted a dog of her lineage. Huskies are smart and active… They need to keep both their mind and body active. Roxy will need daily hikes or runs, as well as mental stimulation. She is good off leash and should make a wonderful hiking buddy. While Roxy likes to play with other dogs, her play style can be quite inappropriate and bossy. We are recommending that Roxy be the only dog in the home, and that play sessions be closely monitored with other dogs. Roxy is looking for a home where her basic manners training and education will be continued, and she will get some fun exploring the beautiful area we live in! Roxy is a large, spayed female Husky/German Shepherd mix born around October 2010. For more information about Roxy or any of the other wonderful pets awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-4351.

The SVO Pet of the Week is Dexter. Dexter is one cool cat. Nothing seems to bother him, and we're guessing that his years roaming neighborhoods allowed him to see it all. He came to us as a stray, but he was already neutered, indicating he at one time was someone's pet. He also had a large abscess on his side, suggesting that another cat in the neighborhood wasn't so fond of him. We think Dexter would make a great family companion. He enjoys attention, but he’s also content to watch it all from his perch. He is a large cat, but doesn't mind being handled or petted. If you like the look of a Russian Blue, come meet Dexter… he is every bit as handsome. He sure deserves a better life from here on out. Dexter is a neutered male Russian Blue/DSH mix born around December 2009. For more information about Dexter or any of the other wonderful cats and dogs available for adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call us at 788-6444.

The SVO Pet of the Week is Mondo. Let’s be honest. Mondo is a big cat. In fact, he is one of the largest cats we've seen. We think he carries most of his weight in his head. Besides being large, Mondo is very sweet. He is a bit reserved, but once you get to know him, he loves attention and will happily be petted all day long. He seems fine with other cats and just keeps to himself. He isn't very intimidated by dogs, but that is probably because he is about the same size as a lot of them. This guy is an absolute doll, and we're hopeful he'll find his forever home soon. Mondo is a neutered male Domestic Shorthair born around 12/15/09. For more information about Mondo or any of the other wonderful cats and dogs available for adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, please visit out website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-4351.

The SVO Pet of the Week is Cat Benetar. Cat Benetar arrived at the Shelter as a stray. She is loveable and outgoing and clearly was someone's pet at one time. She is easy going and gets along well with other cats. She doesn't seem to be too put out by a friendly canine, and we feel she'd be fine in an active home with other pets. While she may not be able to sing you a rock tune, we're pretty sure she'll provide you with lots of love for years to come. Cat Benatar is a spayed female Domestic Shorthair born around April 2010. The SVO Pet of the Week is Midnight. Midnight was brought to the Shelter along with her kitten Milky Way. While she wanted to be a great mom, it seemed she was unable to produce enough milk for her kitten. So, the two were put into a foster home where Midnight could provide her kitten with love and care, and the foster mom could provide her with much needed nutrients. After being a wonderful mom, Midnight is now ready to find her own forever home. She loves people and loves attention. She is friendly with other cats and will even try to play with dogs! She'll need a home where she can be a true member of the family. Midnight is a spayed female Domestic Shorthair Bobtail born around September 2010.For more information on Midnight or any of the other wonderful cats or dogs available for adoption at the Animal Shelter, please visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-4351.

Spaghetti and Acorn, named after the varieties of squash, are two adorable young cats. Found as strays, they were brought to the Shelter for safe keeping. They both have unique markings and are incredibly eye catching, but in different ways. Acorn has precise brown and black patterns against white, with large, compelling eyes, and Spaghetti’s longer hair is soft and predominantly dove grey. Affectionate and outgoing, these two pretty kitties enjoy attention and are always ready to play. They are friendly with other cats and, while not too sure about dogs, they're more likely to check out a human visitor and enjoy a bit of attention than to hide. Spaghetti and Acorn are great cats looking for a loving place to call home. Acorn and Spaghetti are both fixed Domestic Shorthairs born around April 2011. Some dogs have the perfect names. Zen is a dog who exudes a zen-like attitude about life. She is calm, peaceful, and content to hang out as much as she is to go for a walk. If only we all could only be so at peace with the world around us! Zen is a wonderful dog. She loves everyone she meets, and our volunteers love to take her out on walks, because she doesn't pull and is happy to walk at any pace. She is great with other dogs. She has lived harmoniously with cats, but she does like to chase them when they're outside and they run. Zen is good with children, and she would be fine with a dog who doesn't want to play all day. Zen could easily make some lucky person a perfect companion. Zen is a spayed female Pit Bull Terrier born around October 2004. For more information about Zen or any of the other wonderful dogs or cats available for adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-4351.

It's raining kittens at the Animal Shelter! It's a downright cutefest! Some are so bonded they would love to go home together as a pair, so Shelter is currently offering a "two for one" or half price sale on kitten adoption fees. You've got to see these little guys to believe what a cutefest it is at the Animal Shelter right now, so come on down and give a kitty a home... but only if you know you'll love him just as much when all grown up as you will when he's tiny. These guys are looking for nothing less than families they can count on for the rest of their lives. Here are some of the kittens available at the time of publication, but hurry... Six skaters represented the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club at the Cottonwood Heights Oktoberfest competition in Salt Lake City, September 22-24. Competing at levels ranging from Basic Skills to Novice Ladies, the team captured twenty first though fourth place medals. For the second time in three years, Alex Stuessi, an 11 year old Hemingway Elementary School fifth grader, won the 2011 Oktoberfest Most Outstanding Showcase Trophy. Priscilla was passed from home to home until eventually she was brought to the Shelter so she could find her forever home. Priscilla is a quiet, beautiful cat who is independent, but enjoys some attention. She is fine with other cats and is ok with dogs. Priscilla is still young and active, and she’s a bit shy, so she would do best in a home where she wouldn’t be expected to be a lap cat. She is great about using her litter box, and likes to use her scratching post as well. Priscilla is a nice cat that really deserves a home she can count on for life. We are hopeful that this time around, she’ll be loved by her adopters forever. Priscilla is a spayed female DLH born around May 2008.For more information about Priscilla or the other wonderful dogs and cats awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, please visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-4351.

The SVO Pet of the Week is Boots. Boots' owners got a job in a neighboring state and decided not to take Boots with them. Boots is a really nice cat and quite handsome too. He has lived with a cat and dog before, but would probably do best without rambunctious dogs in the house. Boots has proven to be a good family cat… He likes attention, and he’s good with kids. Boots is quite active. His favorite game is to chase string around. Still a kitten at heart, Boots is looking to have many years of playing with his forever family. Boots is a neutered male Domestic Shorthair born around August 2007. For more information on Boots or any of the other wonderful cats and dogs waiting for their new homes at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or phone 788-4351.

The SVO Pet of the Week is Liza

The SVO pet of the week is Liza.  Liza was adopted from the Shelter three years ago and has found herself back and once again looking for a forever home. If given the chance, Liza will tell you all about it. She loves to talk, and she loves getting attention. She is most talkative when she is hungry, which is about 20 hours of the day. It seems that in the past, Liza was allowed to eat as much as she wanted and this resulted in her becoming quite large. Here at the Shelter, she is back on a diet and we're working on getting her to be the svelte beauty her lovely markings should grace. While Liza isn't crazy about the idea, she is being a good sport! Liza is good with other cats and not too fazed by dogs. She is a wonderful cat with loads of personality. This girl deserves nothing but a fabulous forever home. Liza is a spayed female Domestic Shorthair born around August 2005. For more information on Liza or any of the other wonderful dogs or cats awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.com or phone us at 788-4351.

The SVO Pet of the Week is Rolo. Rolo and her sister Tootsie were left at the shelter at night, presumably abandoned. Although they had each other, it was still a very scary event. Rolo is sweet and sensitive and can be a bit nervous in new situations. Since arriving at the shelter, Miss Rolo is experiencing lots of new things and is already building up her confidence. Rolo loves other dogs and would benefit by sharing her new home with another more confident canine. Due to her shy nature, we are recommending a home without children under the age of twelve years old. Rolo is ready to be someone’s special little girl and become the most loving and loyal puppy she can be. Rolo is a medium size, spayed female Australian Shepherd/Chow Chow mix born around August 2010. For more information about Rolo or any of the other wonderful dogs and cats available for adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or phone 788-4351.

The SVO Pet of the Week is Eleanor. Eleanor came to the shelter when her family lost their home. Despite these hard times, she is a super sweet, happy and outgoing girl. Eleanor is always ready for any adventure; she is a wonderful hiking companion and loves everyone she meets human and canine! Eleanor has not had much formal training, but she is extremely bright and eager to learn new things. This agile and spirited girl would do best in a home where regular exercise is part of the routine. She has lived with children before, but, due to her energy level, we feel kids over 6 years old would be best. Eleanor is ready to resume living the good life and not miss out on enjoying one day of summer!Eleanor is a medium size spayed female Labrador Retriever / German Shorthaired Pointer mix born around June 2010. For more information on Eleanor or any of the other wonderful dogs and cats awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-4351.

The SVO Pet of the Week is Wishbone.  Wishbone was given up due to family complications. He is 10 years old. He is taking the change in stride, but his unhappiness is quite apparent. It is tough for senior dogs to be homeless, so we are hoping he’ll find his “forever home” soon.  Wishbone is a great little dog. He is friendly with most dogs and has lived with cats before. He loves going for hikes and loves to be with people. If you’ve thought about having a Jack Russell, but weren’t sure you could handle a young one, Wishbone would be the perfect introduction to the breed. He is still quite a character and definitely an active dog. Wishbone would do best in a home without very young children and with owners able to give him moderate amounts of exercise. This handsome gentleman is eager to be back in a home, this time forever.Wishbone is a neutered male Jack Russell Terrier (purebred) born around June 2001. For more information about Wishbone and all of the other wonderful dogs and cats awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter, visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or phone 788-4351.

Work with a dog to promote pet adoption this Friday, June 24!  Take Your Dog to Work Day is a national event first celebrated in 1999.  According to the official website, "This annual event encourages employers to experience the value of pets in their workplace for this one special Friday to celebrate and support the pet community" and to encourage people to adopt homeless animals from humane societies, animal shelters and rescues.  While the dog-loving nature of this community means many of us are already allowed to bring our pooches to the office, this celebration is a great chance for those who don't regularly bring their dogs to work to do so as well.

Visit www.takeyourdog.com for more information on the day and to download a participation packet which includes sample policies on pets in the workplace, particularly if you or your employer needs some reassurance about safety and productivity.  In fact, according to the website, studies have shown that having dogs in the workplace actually "increases productivity and creativity, decreases absenteeism and improves co-worker relationships."  And for those of you who can never resist photo ops of your beloved pets, you're invited to submit your workin' like a dog photos to their annual photo contest and have a chance to win prizes.

If you don't have a dog but might be ready for one, please visit the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley to see the many adorable adoptable dogs ready for their loving forever homes.  You can get a preview of some of the available animals at http://animalshelterwrv.org/dog_gallery.php.  If you're unsure of how to choose the right animal for your life, the shelter's adoption counselors are trained to help you make a great choice.  You can also read more at this recent blog on adopting: http://www.sunvalleymag.com/Blogs/Fetch/Summer-2011/Making-a

About Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley

The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, the first “no kill” shelter in Idaho, promotes companion animal welfare by providing temporary shelter for homeless animals, adopting them to qualified homes and reducing animal abuse, neglect and overpopulation through community education and spay/neuter services. More than 90 percent of its funding comes from private donations.

In 2010 more than 1500 animals received services from the shelter. This includes 388 animals that were adopted, 257 lost animals that were reunited with their owners, 247 shelter animals that were spayed/neutered, and 363 privately owned animals that were spayed or neutered at no cost to their owners, and over 6000 pounds of food distributed through our Paws for Hunger partnership with The Hunger Coalition. On an average day, the shelter cares for 35 dogs and 31 cats.
