The once anti-Nashville based Joe Buck gained notoriety as the guitarist of Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers. As Hank III’s villainous sideman onstage, the snarling upright bass player became infamously recognizable. Joe Buck Yourself is now a bona fide evil mother-trucking, one man band. This unique blend of hellbilly punk rock ain’t your grandma’s hillbilly music. Joe Buck yourself, mother-truckers!

The Micky and the Motorcars show at Whiskey’s is cancelled.  Mark McCoy, bassist and friend of the band died on the river in Stanley last weekend. A Celebration of life will be held for McCoy Saturday, April 28th, at 4PM @ the Stanley Community Building in Stanley with a potluck dinner afterwards.

Unlike the previous three albums by country band Micky and the Motorcars, the group — this go-around — had plenty of time to prepare for NAIVE. During recording sessions on the past discs, says front man-lead vocalist Micky Braun, “if a good gig came up, we had to leave the studio.”  Now established as one of the best-drawing bands on the lucrative Texas Music circuit, Micky and the Motorcars had plenty of time to make NAIVE (Smith Entertainment; street date: July 29, 2008), accumulating a large stockpile of songs before members even entered Austin’s Cedar Creek Studios.  “We had a good amount of time off, so we did a lot of rehearsal, working up different arrangements and trying to figure out the right way to play them,” says Braun. “That was kind of grueling, but it worked out.”  Braun collaborated on many of the songs on NAIVE with musicians such as his brother, Reckless Kelly lead singer Willy Braun, as well as Randy Rogers, Kevin Welch, Welch’s children, Dustin and Savannah, and Jack Ingram bassist Robert Kern. The Brauns actually wrote the title track, which Micky Braun calls “your classic wife-cheating-on-the-husband, husband-comes-home thing,” several years ago in their native Idaho. “It never really panned out, so I sat back down, and we ended up getting a good rock ’n’ roll version,” he says.  “Long Enough to Leave,” written by Micky Braun and Randy Rogers, covers familiar territory for someone traveling almost two-thirds of the year. “[It’s about] always being on the road, but never being able to stay,” he says. “Every time you get comfortable, you have to peel out.  “It’s funny,” he continues. “I played this song for my girlfriend and she said, ‘This is about a guy who’s cheating on his wife.’ I said, ‘No, not at all,’ and then I went back and listened to it and said, ‘Wow, that does kind of make sense.’ I think that’s what’s neat about songs: People come up with their own opinions and kind of live in ’em that way.”

Psychedelic Soul, sometimes called black Rock, is a sub-genre of Soul music, which mixes the characteristics of Soul with Psychedelic Rock. It came to prominence in the late 1960s and continued into the 1970s, playing a major role in the development of Soul and Funk music.

Over the past seven years, Monophonics have staked their claim as one of California’s premier band’s. Raised amid the Bay Area’s rich musical culture, Monophonics has proudly carried on the tradition of music native to their hometown which flourished during the birth of psychedelia.

Monophonics were formed in 2005; originally a instrumental ensemble comprised of guitarist Ian McDonald, bassist Myles O’Mahony, saxophonist Alex Baky, trumpeter Ryan Scott, and drummer Austin Bohlman, the band has recently added the dynamic soul vocals of keyboardist Kelly Finnigan. The result is a psychedelic soul & heavy funk sound, which harks back to the stylings of the late 60’s and early 70’s, all while keeping its feet planted in the present.

Boom Chick - Shake Can Well from Live & Breathing on Vimeo.

Friday night loft party. Summer heat. Youth gather for connection & reverberation. Close your eyes. Forget what year it is. The song is telling a story. Someone is grabbing you, swaying step in step. Tremelo swirls. You are on the floor, kissing. Melodies & emotions rise & fall. Surf breeze & a desert moon. Animal eyes sparkle in the midnight forest. You feel the beat of the big drum through the floor. Your friends help you up, you are dancing again. Boom Chick is Frank Hoier on guitar & vocals and Moselle Spiller on drums. Formed in Brooklyn, NY Sept 2009, their sound is a reflection of their ecstatic love for early American rock & roll, surf guitar, early country music & Delta blues.

Old Death Whisper is a cocktail of dirty western roots music and country tinged parlor tunes that spike raw rebellion into the veins of American music with the dust of the Idaho back roads.

ODW loves good old country and folk music of early America. Sea shanties, spaghetti westerns, railroad songs, road movies, pulp, noir, punk and rock and roll are among some of their influences. With 4 song writers in the band and each one taking their turn on the mic, the tunes have diversity and yet a common thread of the love for this kind of music. Whether it’s plugged in or broken down and acoustic; the live shows are full of piss and vinegar. Keeping their sound grounded in the roots of western American music, Old Death Whisper lets their sound drift into widescreen sonic voyages, down dusty trails, dirty back roads and seedy dive bars.

From the beginning of their time together, this core trio has been profoundly influenced by the culture and music of the south and, specifically, New Orleans.  Since they first got serious about the band a yearly pilgrimage to the New Orleans Jazz Fest to bond over late nights jam sessions and bellies full of beer of crawfish has been practically mandatory.  “A lot of serious band decisions have been made on our yearly Jazz Fest visit,” said Low who considers the New Orleans style of drumming to be at the core of his playing due to years studying under the legendary Crescent City drummer Stanton Moore of Galactic and Garage A Trois.  For the last two years The Fox Street All Stars have had the honor of not only headlining the official Galactic After Show Party, but also of having Moore sit-in with them for several numbers.  The New Orleans vibe is a big part of what fuels the bands energy day in and day out…

Hotel Chelsea has one amazing talent: pushing the boundaries of what a four piece band can do with a simple pop punk song. The band sprinkles its three-to-five chords with insidiously infectious guitar leads that punctuate their rhythm guitar riffs and vocals perfectly. Armed with a sardonic sense of humor and an armful of unlikely pop culture references, Hotel Chelsea has updated the ’90s pop punk recipe to include modern ingredients (e.g., swap out coffee for well whiskey) in order to feed an increasingly cynical audience.

Andy Frasco, a twenty-three blues/jazz musician hailing from the San Fernando Valley in Southern California, is nothing short of an enigma. Influenced by Damien Rice, Sam Cooke, Professor Longhair, Van Morrison and Tom Waits, Frasco’s style is as uninhibited as those artists who inspire him. Let’s call it Party Blues.

Within the past three years alone, Frasco has trekked over 120,000 miles, performed over 700 shows, with spanning over 6 countries. Frasco’s journey, however, is just beginning. This revolutionary is on a mission to alter the music business as we know it.

It began as a party, grew into a band, evolved into a sound, and emerged as an institution.  Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band (aka the Booty Band) has gone through many changes since their fated onset in 2002. Today they are ready to shake the world, one cheek at a time.

The band’s first official studio release, Now You Know, debuted in 2007 to critical acclaim. The Booty Band received Home Grown Music Network’s Album of the Year and Band of the Year awards, as well as the #3 best regional album from WNCW, one of the top Triple A stations in the country. Awe-inspiring live shows, powerful original compositions, and crowd-pleasing presentations have helped the Booty Band build a rock-solid nationwide fanbase. Having completed three national tours in 2010 alone, the band has worked hard and done well to keep this fanbase fired up and growing fast.  They have secured headlining slots at many prestigious festivals including Wakarusa, Jam Cruise, Bear Creek, Jazz Aspen, Long Beach Funk Fest, Rock Boat, Bele Chere (six consecutive years), Floyd Fest, and Smile Fest

MARINADE: A juicy, succulent combination of many different flavors that one would use to tenderize and flavatize anything for consumption. In this case it is the perfect name for this band from Salt Lake City, Utah. Their music is diverse, from Blues to Funk, Reggae to Rock, Psychedelic to Soul, they keep you on your toes, literally. They have a passion to let their music breathe, really jam out, so each song can marinate your aural palate. They have spread the soak all over Utah and Colorado, as well as played shows in Idaho and Arizona.

With Talia Keys on Drums, Guitar, Mandolin and Vocals, James Trevino on Bass, Jimmy Rockstar on Guitar, Matt Pizza on Percussion, and Spencer Kellogg on Saxophone, it is surely to be a diverse and highly energetic show. “Talia seems to me to be a reincarnate of Janis Joplin and the more I think about it the band sounded a lot like a modern version of The Holding Company” says Lewis Cooper, professional music photographer. Andrew Roy of Slug Magazine puts it right, “the band works so hard and plays so often that you’d probably need to put effort into missing Marinade these days, and that’d be wasted effort for sure.” Finally Austen Diamond from City Weekly comments, “With Keys at the helm, playing drums and letting her pipes soar to epic heights, Marinade is tight….The audience is like Mmmmm, because their sound’s scintillating, multi-flavored kick, with its spicy funk, salty blues, savoury reggae and chill jazz, is finger-lickin’ good.”

When Donavon Frankenreiter was 10 years old, he got his first surfboard. Six years later, he picked up his first guitar. It was the beginning of a wildly creative journey: His  improvisational twin obsessions have carried him around the globe and into his fans’ hearts. As Frankenreiter    prepares to release his fourth album, Glow, this fall, the 37-year-old singer/songwriter/pro surfer admits he still thrives on simply taking the plunge. “We don’t have a set show, if we did, I would  go crazy,” he says. “You never know what’s going to happen. I love that element of surprise with music and surfing — you never catch the same wave twice.”

While developing a following overseas, he joined Fred Wesley’s band, touring and recording with him on multiple releases. This led to five straight ahead jazz albums by Denson on Minor Music, the last of which was released to rave reviews and featured Karl in a trio setting with Miles Davis alumni Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette. In 1993, Denson joined DJ Greyboy in creating Greyboy Records and released the legendary acid jazz staple, Freestylin. Out of that collaboration, Denson formed The Greyboy Allstars, which became world renowned as the ultimate groove band, spreading their “West Coast Boogaloo” style worldwide.

Denson took this formula to the next level by putting more emphasis on vocals and adding some funk, R&B and hip hop elements. It turned out to be a winning combination, which set KDTU on the top of the heap in the touring world from 1999 through 2005, selling over 250,000 records to date. “My style is based in dance” shares Denson. “ I love the idea of creating something that naturally makes people want to move.” KDTU has headlined and performed at US Festivals including Bonnaroo, Bumbershoot, The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, All Good Music Festival, Wakarusa Music Festival, Playboy Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival and many more. Global festival appearances include the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, North Sea Jazz festival in Holland, Moscow Jazz Festival in Russia, East Coast Blues and Roots Festival in Australia and the Montreux Jazz festival in Switzerland. Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe has shared the stage with acts as diverse as Jack Johnson, D’Angelo, James Brown, Dave Matthews Band, Michael Franti & Spearhead, The Allman Brothers, Keene and Maroon 5.

With years of collective experience under their belts, Drew Emmitt and Bill Nershi exemplify the forward-thinking modern bluegrass musician. As linchpins of two legendary jam-bands –Drew with Leftover Salmon, Bill with the String Cheese Incident–both men have done the stadium-filling, high-profile rock ‘n’ roll thing to perfection. Along the way, however, they’ve honed their songwriting and playing chops and studied the bluegrass, rock and jazz masters they admire. Above all, Drew and Bill have shared a commitment to keeping music human-scaled and honest. Those qualities are found in abundance on their latest and greatest collaboration, New Country Blues–11 tunes made in Newgrass heaven.

Actually, the duo cut New Country Blues not far from home, in Colorado. Drew, who was born in Tucson, AZ and grew up in the heart of bluegrass country in Nashville, had been busy touring with Bill as the Emmitt-Nershi Band and had even done some reunion gigs with Leftover Salmon. Meanwhile, Bill had come to the Centennial State by way of New York State and New Jersey. Like his mandolin-playing bandmate, Bill had taken up bluegrass after catching a memorable edition of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in the early 1980s. Back then he’d intended to return to New York, but the lure of blue-sky bluegrass in Colorado proved irresistible.

4 On The Floor will be one of the hottest bands in 2012. Hailing from Minneapolis, MN, this will be their first tour out west. Show at Whiskey Jacques Friday February 10th at 10PM.  $5 Bucks at the door.

"They pull no punches. They won’t bore you with trying to explain how multi-genre and indefinable they are. The 4onthefloor play rock music. The 4onthefloor play blues music. And they do it in 4/4 time.

4×4, The 4onthefloor’s debut album, showcases the band’s heavy-handed (or should we say heavy-footed) rhythm section that, when paired with lead singer Gabriel Douglas’ gritty, baritone vocals, makes the listener both nostalgic and ready to drink… or maybe even fight. Through gutsy Delta–Blues and classic Americana, The 4onthefloor put their signature stomp on these classic genres with not one but four bass drums pulsing to the beat of all 16 tracks.

Inspired by The Doors, Muddy Waters, CCR, Howlin’ Wolf, Tommy James & the Shondells and Waylon Jennings to name a few, all four members operate on the same hard-hitting, bourbon-infused wavelength while keeping perfect time." -Off Their Official Website

If you’ve followed Tony Furtado’s prolific music career at all you won’t be surprised to know that his 15th album, Golden, is loaded with several impressive firsts. For the first time, he has self-produced and penned every track. It is also the first time his own artwork- a sculpture of a two-headed rabbit- has been featured on the cover. However, on what is arguably his most engaging, masterful recording to date, one first marks this album more than any other. After 20 years of recording, touring basically living on the road, it is the first time Furtado has ever recorded an album in the town that he calls home.

Recorded, mixed and co-produced by friend and engineer Rob Stroup at 8-Ball Studio in Portland, OR, Golden, is the product of Furtado surrounded by the comforts of home, weaving his way through the diverse cultural fabric of a city rich with music, art and talent. In classic Furtado fashion, he explores the hills and valleys of familiar and new musical territory ranging from Americana, Celtic and folk to indie rock and pop. And while his award-winning playing and unforgettable leads are present throughout, it is his vocal presence, diverse arrangements and songwriting that take center stage on Golden.

Check him out @ Whiskey Jacques Thursday Feb. 9th. Band starts at 9:30pm. $8 bucks at the door.
