The Forum, titled “Novel Opportunities for Breast Cancer Therapy,” will be held in conjunction with the 16th Annual Laura Evans Memorial Breast Cancer Symposium.

The Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research will hold its 16th Annual Laura Evans Memorial Breast Cancer Symposium Open Forum in the Continental Room at the Sun Valley Inn on Thursday, March 8, from 5-7 p.m. St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation is sponsoring this year’s Forum.

The Open Forum, titled “Novel Opportunities for Breast Cancer Therapy,” is open to the public and free. Expedition Inspiration is proud to offer the public an opportunity to hear the latest in breast cancer therapy and to have breast cancer related questions answered.

“Though the researchers specialize in breast cancer, the Open Forum has relevance for all individuals effected by cancer, regardless of the specific kind of cancer they are surviving,” said Expedition Inspiration Board of Directors Chair and breast cancer survivor Suzanne Pere-Mulenos. “The progress investigators have made in breast cancer research has translated to improved treatment options for many, many other kinds of cancers.”

Wood River Valley resident Dani Stern attended the Open Forum in 2011 after being diagnosed with stage IV metastatic breast cancer. “I’m willing to climb the tallest mountain and scream out to everyone that we’re not there yet, and my family depends on the cure soon, “ said Stern.

After attending the Forum, Stern was motivated to seek out the best medical care. “I just know a cure is around the corner.  We’ve all fought too hard to give up now.”

This year’s speakers are C. Kent Osborne, M.D., director of the Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine; and Lisa A. Carey, M.D., breast cancer hematology/oncology professor in the Lineberger Comprehensive Center of University of North Carolina.

This Forum offered through Expedition Inspiration is a tremendous resource to the people of the Wood River Valley and beyond,” said St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation Chief Development Officer Megan Thomas.  “Community generosity enables the Foundation to support programs, like this free Open Forum, that fundamentally improve health care experiences in our community.”

The Open Forum is held in conjunction with the 16th Annual Laura Evans Memorial Breast Cancer Symposium titled “The Metastatic Process and Novel Opportunities for Breast Cancer Research.” The Symposium, held under the guidance of Marc Lippman, M.D. and Angela DeMichele, M.D., M.S.C.E., is an invitation-only conference that encourages the free exchange of current breast cancer research and ideas. Attendees include basic scientists, clinical investigators and practicing clinicians.

“This is an exciting time for breast cancer research, because we are on the verge of uncovering so much information about each cancer's unique drivers,” said Expedition Inspiration board member Kimberly Allison, M.D. “This knowledge should lead us to more targeted, personalized therapies that will deliver more cures for more patients.”

The attendees have intense working sessions to share unpublished information, analyze breakthroughs, recognize hurdles to finding a cure and discuss advances in treatment.  After the Symposium, attendees continue to pool information and develop new cross-country clinical trials.

"The Expedition Inspiration Annual Symposium is truly a meeting of the greatest minds in breast cancer research – the ‘rock stars’ of the field,” said Allison. “It is a powerful event because of its singular focus on sharing ideas to move the field forward. There is nothing quite like it, and it exists because of Expedition Inspiration's mission and supporters."

Directly following the Symposium, past and current attendees of the Symposium will decide on the next recipients of the Brenda M. Williams Young Investigator Award and Young Investigator Award. The awards come at a crucial time in the development of the junior scientists’ careers.

“Our Young Investigator Awardees are extremely productive, resulting a huge return on their investment,” said Angela DeMichele, M.D., M.C.S.E. “What sets the EI Symposium apart is that it continues to be the only organization that supports young investigators at a critical juncture in their work.”

Young Investigator Award recipients from the previous year are invited to attend the Symposium and present their research to the senior scientists in attendance. This year’s Young Investigator attendees are J. Chuck Harrell, Ph.D., of Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at University of North Carolina; and Patrick Morris, M.D., of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

The Open Forum sponsor, St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation, is a nonprofit organization with the mission to accelerate the advancement of innovative programs and services that fundamentally improve health care experiences in our community. The foundation has put more than $30 million in community generosity to build and equip the hospital and to support exceptional health care services and health well-being programs in the Wood River Valley. For more information, please contact Thomas at 208-727-8444 or visit http://www.slwrf.org.

The Annual Laura Evans Memorial Breast Cancer Symposium is central to the mission of Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research, which is to sponsor the annual symposium to involve researchers in the free exchange of ideas to identify "breakthrough" projects and to accelerate the development of new, effective treatments for breast cancer. Expedition Inspiration also sponsors and organizes challenging physical activities for the purpose of raising funds for medical research and public education.

For more information, please visit http://www.expeditioninspiration.org/index.php, or call the Expedition Inspiration Fund office at 208-726-6456. You can also “Like” the Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research on Facebook and follow @EI_SunValley on Twitter.

A rare opportunity to see authentic Flamenco dance and music, live in Sun Valley, Idaho!

Based in New York City, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is one of the nation's premier flamenco and Spanish dance companies. They believe that the universal spirit of flamenco, a multicultural art form, has the power to build bridges between cultures and inspire audiences from diverse backgrounds.

With verve and passion, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is dedicated to keeping the sizzling hot art of flamenco alive. The company, one of the most renowned in the United States, will perform in Sun Valley on February 25 as part of its Winter 2012 national tour.

Hailed by the New York Times for its “spirited dancing and imaginative choreographic concepts,” the company calls New York City’s famous Joyce Theater its home when not touring. Their performance will spotlight dances that show how flamenco has evolved in different countries, from Spain and Argentina to Colombia and Cuba. Called “La Pasíon Flamenca,” the program is a fierce and eclectic evening of Spanish dance and music featuring lamenting solos, sizzling duets and a rousing full-company finale.

The performance starts at 6:30 pm Saturday, February 25 at the Sun Valley Opera House and is part of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts Winter Performing Arts Series. Individual tickets are now on sale at www.sunvalleycenter.org for $30 Sun Valley Center members, $40 nonmembers and $10 for students 18 and under.

Founded in 1983, Flamenco Vivo has delighted and astonished audiences and critics for more than 20 years. Jack Anderson wrote in the New York Times that he never knew stamping could be so “infinitely varied.” With dramatic lighting, costuming and music, Flamenco Vivo’s performances are “an infectious joyful celebration of music and dance . . . the Carlota Santana Spanish Dance Company knows how to put on a show,” wrote his colleague Jennifer Dunning, dance critic for the New York Times.

The company also is committed to an arts education initiative that has reached thousands of children in New York City, North Carolina (its second home) and around the country through lectures, demonstrations and residencies. While in the Wood River Valley, Flamenco Vivo will offer a Flamenco Dance Workshop on Saturday, February 25, for all ages. Cost is $20 for adult members, $30 nonmembers and $10 for kids 13-18. The workshop will be held at Zenergy at 11:15 am; register online at www.sunvalleycenter.org.

The Sun Valley Wellness Institute is pleased to announce that best-selling author and renowned brain scientist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor will be delivering the keynote presentation to kick off the 2012 Sun Valley Wellness Festival held over Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28 in Sun Valley, Idaho.  Her presentation will be held Friday evening, May 25, 6:00pm at the Sun Valley Resort.

Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, a Harvard-trained and published neuroanatomist, experienced a severe hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain in 1996. On the afternoon of this rare form of stroke (AVM), she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. It took eight years for Dr. Taylor to successfully rebuild her brain - from the inside out. In response to the swelling and trauma of the stroke, which placed pressure on her dominant left hemisphere, the functions of her right hemisphere blossomed.  She is the author of the New York Times bestselling memoir about her recovery from her stroke and the insights she gained into the workings of her brain, entitled My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey.

In 2008, Dr. Taylor gave a presentation at the TED Conference in Monterey, CA, which has become the second most viewed TED Talk of all time. This now famous 18-minute presentation catapulted her story into the public eye. As a result, she was chosen as one of TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World for 2008. In addition, Dr. Taylor was the premiere guest on Oprah Winfrey's Soul Series web-cast and was interviewed by Oprah and Dr. Oz on The Oprah Winfrey Show in October, 2008, and that interview was just rebroadcast on Oprah’s OWN in January 2012.  Her story is being made into a feature film directed by Ron Howard.

-more-

Dr. Taylor is one of those rare speakers who can keep an audience perched on the edge of their seats. She projects an amazing positive energy and is committed to educating everyone about the beauty and resiliency of the human brain. She keynotes with the single intention of helping her audience walk away with a better understanding of what is going on inside their heads and how they can get their brain to do what they want it to do.
Dr. Taylor explains in terms everyone can understand how our brain organizes information and what the differences are between our right and left cerebral hemispheres. She firmly believes that the most important relationship we each have is the relationship between our logical, rational, verbal left brain, and its counterpart - our creative, intuitive, thinking in pictures right hemisphere. She helps us understand how our two brains work together to create a single seamless perception of reality, and what is going on inside our heads when we experience personal conflict.

Dr. Taylor now serves as the CEO of My Stroke of Insight, Inc. and as the Chairman of the Board of Jill Bolte Taylor BRAINS, Inc., a not-for-profit organization which is dedicated to providing educational services and promoting programs related to the advancement of brain awareness, appreciation, exploration, education, injury prevention, neurological recovery, and the value of movement on mental and physical health, as well as other activities that support this purpose. She is working on the creation of a Serious Game for Health for neurological recovery as she feels passionate about helping others find their way back from neurological trauma.

Initially too poor to buy instruments, the African group H’Sao rose to worldwide fame on the strength of its magnificent unaccompanied vocals and high-energy live performances.

H’Sao (say “ah-shhh-ow”) brings its unique African/Western music to the Sun Valley Opera House on Saturday, January 21, as part of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts Winter Performance Series.

“People are just going to love this group,” says Kristine Bretall, The Center’s Director of Marketing and Performing Arts. “Their a cappella songs are amazingly gorgeous, and when they add in keyboards, drums, guitar and bass they produce danceable music that’s a mixture of jazz, pop, gospel, soul and R&B, with strong African roots. I guarantee that they’ll have people up on their feet and likely dancing in the aisles!”

H’Sao got its start in Chad, a former French territory in Central Africa, when siblings Caleb, Mossbass, Taroum and Israel Rimtobaye began singing in the church where their father was pastor. Lacking the money to buy instruments, they developed a distinctive and proficient a cappella style. As they began performing publicly in the mid-1990s, they added Charles and Service Ledjebgue to the group.

In October 2000, as part of their first ten-show tour, H’Sao was invited to the Fest’Africa festival in Lille, France. Soon after, they recorded their first demo and were able to buy instruments with their earnings. Until then they had been creating and performing beautiful music with only their voices.

In March 2001, H’sao was selected to represent Chad at a festival in Ottawa, and the band relocated to Montreal that summer. Invitations started pouring in—Montreal International Jazz Festival, Festival Nuits d’Afrique, Francofolies de Montreal, Festival des Musiques du Monde. H’Sao has filled concert halls in Sweden, Ireland, the United States, Colombia, Canada, South Africa, and Australia with vibrant African rhythms and hopeful words.

While in the Wood River Valley, H’Sao will be doing a school residency performing at Woodside, Bellevue, Hailey and Hemingway Elementary Schools.

Show Starts at 6:30pm • Sun Valley Opera House. Individual tickets for H’Sao are $20 Sun Valley Center for the Arts members, $30 for nonmembers and $10 for students 18 and under. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit www.sunvalleycenter.org, call 726.9491 ex 10 or stop by The Center in Ketchum. The 2011/2012 Winter Performing Arts Series is sponsored in part by Boise State Public Radio.

So you think you know what a cello sounds like? Genre-bending cellist Ben Sollee will change your mind about that in a performance at the Sun Valley Opera House on Friday, December 9.

“I never expect to see that cello in one piece after Ben gets done playing it,” says musician Yim Yames, frontman for My Morning Jacket and a friend and musical collaborator of Sollee’s. “He bows and beats and works it over with a passionate fury rarely seen. Don’t get me wrong—he can play it and hold his own with the most schooled and delicate scholars out there, but more importantly, Ben makes it live.”

Classically trained but unwilling to settle for just one kind of music, Sollee puts his cello to use in the service of folk, bluegrass, jazz and R&B. Backing him up at his December concert, part of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts 2011/2012 Winter Performing Arts Series, will be Jordon Ellis on percussion. In addition to playing the cello, Sollee contributes his amazing voice and songwriting talents to the duo.

“It’s Ben’s voice that first attracted my attention,” said The Center’s Performing Arts Director, Kristine Bretall. “He’s got a way of hooking you right in with his incredible voice and then when you add the lyrics and his cello playing, he’s got you. And it’s not only his performance that’ll draw you in, he’s a kind, big-hearted who puts his whole person into his show.”

Sollee first emerged on the music world radar with his inviting 2008 debut album Learning to Bend, which showcased a wild mixture of musical approaches that Sollee describes as “classically influenced folk with leanings of R&B and soul.” The album caught the ear of NPR’s Morning Edition, which heralded Sollee as one of the “Top Ten Great Unknown Artists of 2007.” Sollee’s newest album, Inclusions, came out this spring and “embodies the people, places and things of my life,” he says.

Meanwhile, Sollee was out touring with banjo player and songstress Abigail Washburn as part of the Sparrow Quartet. The ensemble, also featuring Grammy-nominated fiddler Casey Driessen and multi-Grammy winning banjoist Bela Fleck, explored the congregation of eastern and western folk music. The critically acclaimed ensemble toured throughout the world, including a U.S. Ambassadorial Tour of Tibet.

While in the Wood River Valley, Ben Sollee will be doing a school residency with the high school orchestra students, the Community School and the Wood River Middle School.

Individual tickets for Ben Sollee are $20 Sun Valley Center for the Arts members, $30 for nonmembers and $10 for students 18 and under. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit www.sunvalleycenter.org, call 726.9491 ex 10 or stop by The Center in Ketchum. The 2011/2012 Winter Performing Arts Series is sponsored in part by Boise State Public Radio.

For those who are interested in a smaller, more intimate performance, The Center is presenting Ben Sollee in a “salon concert” setting on Saturday, December 10 at Gilman Contemporary in Ketchum. The evening will include beverages, appetizers and a performance with Ben and his cello. Tickets are $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Please contact The Center for details and time.

Sun Valley Fran Jewell, owner of Positive Puppy Dog Training, LLC, was recently featured in Examiner.com in an article on the best way to socialize puppies.

Jewell recommends making “your puppy your first priority.  The first 16 weeks of his life are the ones where you will have the most influence and dramatically set your puppy up for success for the rest of his life.”  So why not have a puppy party and invite friends and family over to meet the new puppy.  And if any of your friends have a safe, older dog, ask them to bring him along.”

The complete article is available at http://www.examiner.com/dog-rescue-in-seattle/5-ways-to-soci.

Jewell is Idaho's only resident to hold the Certified Dog Behavior Consultant  designation from the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants.  She also is an evaluator for the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen and
